Calgary tops Washington in West Finals rematch
The last five minutes proved to be the most important as the Calgary Roughnecks pulled away to beat the Washington Stealth 13-10 on Saturday night at the Comcast Arena.
With time winding down and the score tied at 10, Curtis Dickson and Scott Ranger scored in succession to give the ‘Necks a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
The Roughnecks got out to an early lead courtesy of Jeff Shattler who scored at 1:18 of the first quarter. For every goal the Roughnecks scored, the answered, and Rhys Duch’s power-play goal evened the score at 3-all after the first.
At the half the Stealth had a 5-4 advantage after a late second-quarter goal by Jeff Zywicki. In the first half, Duch provided most of the Stealth’s firepower with three goals and two assists.
Within the first three minutes of the third quarter, the Roughnecks potted three unanswered goals by Shattler, Curtis Manning and Geoff Snider to take a 7-5 lead. “I thought we started getting a little undisciplined there. The first half I thought we played very well defensively,” said Stealth head coach Art Webster.
The Stealth responded with a short-handed goal from Lewis Ratcliff, but ended the quarter trailing 8-6.
Paul Rabil and Cliff Smith scored in the fourth for Washington (0-1), knotting the score at 8. Each team would score twice before Calgary broke the game open.
Duch led the way with four goals for the Stealth, while Shattler had three for the Roughnecks.
After the game, Stealth goalender Tyler Richards reflected on his performance. “It’s more frustrating …you know not being able to bail them out a few times. I felt like I let the guys down,” he said.
It was a heated affair throughout with chippy play between two division rivals.
“It was a great win. Games like that, championship teams win… we had revenge on our mind from last year when they took what we wanted to accomplish. That was our main goal - to win that game - and it was awesome,” said Roughnecks transition player Jeff Shattler.
Up next for the Roughnecks (2-0) is their home opener at the Scotiabank Saddledome on January 21 against the Colorado Mammoth. Meanwhile, the Stealth (0-1) will travel to Philadelphia to play against the Wings on the same date. "We have some things to iron out", said Webster about the upcoming week

NALL DRAFT, USIL NATIONAL COMBINE TO BE HELD IN RICHMOND ON DEC 10-11, 2011
The North American Lacrosse League will host the 2011 National Draft on Sunday, December 11 at Clover Hill Auditorium in Richmond, Virginia. Each of the NALL's five teams will select players in the draft, which will be held in conjunction with the fifth annual USIL National Combine on December 10-11, at SportsQuest Indoor Sports Center in Richmond.
"The National Draft is a significant moment in the young history of the NALL," said Tony Caruso, the league's Commissioner. "We're very excited to hold our draft in conjunction with the USIL National Combine, which will give our teams' coaches, GM's and scouts the opportunity to evaluate and get to know players before they begin building their rosters."
The combine, which features agility testing, indoor lacrosse drills, scrimmage play and an invitational Pro-Am game. All events will be in front of pro GM’s and scouts from each of the five North American Lacrosse League teams -- the Charlotte Copperheads, Hershey Haymakers, Jacksonville Bullies, Kentucky Stickhorses, and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Shamrocks.
NALL teams began building their rosters in October's College Draft, and a handful of others were signed early as Franchise Players, but a majority of NALL players will enter the league through the National Draft. Any lacrosse player deemed of professional caliber is eligible for the National Draft and USIL National Combine.

WASHINGTON RE-SIGNS KYLE HARTZELL
The Washington Stealth announced that the team has re-signed transition player Kyle Hartzell for the 2012 season, pending approval by the National Lacrosse League. Hartzell has played all three seasons of his NLL career with the Stealth.
Hartzell, 26, appeared in 15 games for the Stealth a year ago as the team won its second straight Western Division title. The Dundalk, Md., native tallied three goals and three assists for six points and grabbed 53 loose balls. He set a career high with two goals in the Stealth's 11-10 overtime victory against the Colorado Mammoth to start the 2011 season.
Hartzell was signed by the Stealth as an undrafted free agent prior to the 2009 season. Since then, the field lacrosse star has emerged as an exciting box lacrosse talent for the Stealth. In three seasons, Hartzell has played in 39 games, recording 17 points (5g, 12a) and 202 loose balls in a predominantly defensive role. He played an instrumental role during the 2010 playoffs, in which the Stealth went on to capture its first NLL title.
"Kyle is developing quickly into an outstanding NLL player," said Stealth General Manager Doug Locker. "He has an incredible knack for finding loose balls and adds strength and athleticism to our defense. We are excited to have him back with the Stealth this season."
The 5'10", 205 pound transition player has numerous championships on his resume. Hartzell was named MVP of the Major League Lacrosse playoffs in 2010 as he led the Chesapeake Bayhawks to the MLL title. He also won an NCAA Division III National Championship at Salisbury State University (Md.) and a National Junior College Championship at Essex Community College in Baltimore. Hartzell earned a bronze medal with the US National Indoor Lacrosse Team at the 2011 World Indoor Lacrosse Championships last summer.
The Stealth is set to begin training camp for the 2012 season on December 10. The regular season begins on January 14, when the team hosts the Calgary Roughnecks at the Comcast Arena at Everett.
